BOOK DAY!!!

Today the entire school could read for the whole day. We could read in our PJ's and bring a pillow to be comfy. So I read Ember in the Ashes which I had an advanced readers copy from my Mum's agent in New York.

So when I got comfy I read and read and read until I finished the book in the afternoon. Then I talked a little bit with everyone who was upstairs with me until it was 2.00pm and Amanda came upstairs so she could read a book to us.

Monday

I was just going to school like any other Monday and I arrived, signed myself in and gave Justine a big hug like every school day and then clap started. So we went to circle but Ellen came in and gave Gever a letter and he opened it and read. Once he finished he told everyone to get their bags and go to their band trees so I went to get my bag from the band space. Once I got outside Lucie and I started a poking competition with each other like always. Then Gever came outside after everyone and told us we are all going on a fieldtrip for 15 minutes with our band. So Green Band went to coffee bar. Amanda got us all hot chocolate and vanilla steamer so I had a vanilla steamer because there were no more hot chocolate.

When we got back to school there was a quarantine area sign that there are books in the building so you have to give up all books and wifi capable electronics so I did so. Once Gever explained what was happening and read the whole stupid law thing, I was beyond mad, I was going insane because of this. I thought it was crazy but it was really happening so when Gever finally let us go back to our classroom, we had to go, and we also had to call Amanda Ms Oberski which seemed very strange. When there were no 'government officials' in our 'classroom' we talked about the book ban for the whole day.

Tuesday

When I arrived I had to give my computer, phone and book to Ellen and Justine so I don't read anything. Amanda planned to go to the Library and read all day so she told us to get our Clipper cards and go to the front door. So I went and got my clipper card at least and I waited for everyone else to come and 2 other bands came out to go to the library too so. When everyone else was outside we walked to the Bart station to go to Civic Centre. Once we arrived at the Bart station I put my clipper card on the clipper bit and went through to the bart and we accidently caught the wrong one so we got off the next stop and got the one the other way.

When we finally arrived at Civic Centre we walked to the library. It's huge and Amanda tells us to meet here at noon so everyone went to the kids section and I found the Heroes of Olympus The Mark of Athena and sat down and started reading for the rest of the day until noon. When it was noon I told Oscar it's 12.00 and I went to tell everyone else it's 12.00. So I went downstairs to the meeting spot but Amanda's not there yet so the rest of the band arrives and all of a sudden Amanda is there holding so many books and asks us "who has their library card" and Khalia and Audrey raise their hands. Amanda gives them most of the books except for one and tells them to borrow them for her with their cards so they did and we went to a park near by to eat lunch but I'm thinking 'lunch?' so I just had a granola bar instead. Once we finished eating we went back to the Bart station and I'm thinking 'I miss reading already' so we come back and it's the end of the day.

Wednesday 

Today I was just sitting in the crowd at school listening to everyone argue why they want books back. 3 people said the book ban is good and should stay and I was thinking 'this is just like a Roman Senate meeting where they argue all the time.'

All of a sudden Ellen or Gever said Green Band come up and talk and all the people before me spoke and it was my turn and I didn't have anything to say so Gever asked me if I am for/against the book ban and I say against but I would have said "Positive for the book ban

I believe that the book ban can make sense for some people because there are a few impressionable people who kill each other, cause unrest and vandalism and who do it because of the Hunger Games and many other books like that. So many books have violence, sex scenes, drug use and very rude words in their pages. Or the book is all about it like, Total War: Rome II Fall of Carthage because there is so much violence in the book like elephants squishing people (I won't go in details).

Negative for the book ban

I believe books are good for you because you can learn history, government, new words, culture and much more. They can teach you about what it felt like to live in different places or times, or what it feels like to be a different person. Books are very important for people because they wouldn't be able to read if there were no books and people would be like “I’m bored.” and the other person says “go play some games,” instead of “go read a book.”. I believe the reason it happened was the big gaming companies paying the government to not let kids read and make them play games instead of books.". So Amanda asked Theo to tell us about the rebellious flag he made for books and my band went back in the crowd of students in Brightworks so the Blue and Indigo Band can talk so everyone listens intently for the next 30 minutes or so then Gever, Ellen and Justine tell us to go back to our band spaces and get ready for lunch.

Several hours Later (So mysterious)


Gever tells us to go to the cork floor (I know a floor made out of cork (so cool) (I didn't even learn the name of the place until a month ago it was the cork floor)) so he, Ellen and Justine can tell us exciting news (I know, exciting news). They told us we are allowed to read books again at school so for a special occasion we can dress up in our PJ's and read all day. My thoughts were exploding with joy because we can read again at school so when I'm bored I can go read again (Which doesn't happen at school so just when I can).

I love reading.

evolution of languages and writing

Language

Language has been around for the whole existence of life. For example humans in the stone age could communicate but it was very simple until newer, more complicated languages came in like Alexandrian Greek, Latin, Ancient German and Anglo Saxon. French is a Latin language (along with Spanish, Portuguese and Italian) that makes it one of the most complicated languages to speak in the whole world because it has strict pronunciation compared to the languages in the stone age that are easier than French.

Writing

Writing was first done in Egypt in MMMXL/3400 BCE was the first hieroglyphs ever recorded which was simple compared to the later egyptian hieroglyphs and the english writing is way more complicated because you have different spellings for the same word for the past, present and future. In the stone age they didn’t even have a writing system until the neolithic age of human technology was discovered for example writing and better weapons.

bans and bill of rights

I feel really sad about this book ban because we can't read at school anymore. And we also have to call the collaborators by their surname and we have to line up in the morning by band and by age order. The government shouldn't interfere with Brightworks! On the weekend I watched a documentary called Fed Up, which was all about how the US government gets money from food companies and how there is too much sugar in food. They should ban sugar in schools instead of books. The US goverment isn't really that great at governing. This wouldn't happen in Australia!!! I'M GOING TO GO BACK SO I CAN READ AT SCHOOL!

A ban is, not having permission to own an object. In ancient roman times a ban meant that you lost all your property and people could rob you, hurt you and kill you so they could do whatever they wanted to you.  The reason bans happen is for the public to be safe, for their health and protection.

I believe the bill of rights is related because you are getting rid of freedom of speech because you can't ask questions about the book ban and freedom of use because you can't read a book or even use your computer to use the internet. So even though the government are behind the ban, it's actually against what it says in the bill of rights which is what the American government is all about! It makes no sense.


Photography Arc

On the first day of the photography arc my band wrote a question to ask everyone in the band (well I don't really remember the rest of that day or several days after that because that was months ago). The only question I remember was “what’s your favourite colour?”. Mine was blue (it still is).

One day we went on a scavenger hunt for photos (of course the reason we did it was the photography arc) and you can go on the scavenger hunt blog post for more details and the photos are there too so I got about X photos I took myself not off the internet and here is the post.

One time we went to Phillips band space to learn about the rule of thirds so we had to write a lot of things which hurt my hands so much while Phillips band was in our bandspace relaxing there hands and talking about it not writing (I have no idea what they were talking about so don't ask).


Another day Sean came in and showed us how to do a very basic technical drawing with no tools except the mighty measuring tape so we can measure the 3 pieces of wood drilled together in a mighty π shape, the shape with the ends sticking a little bit on the other side so not so much like π.

Really recently we went to mendicino (I always leave the best for last) for a whole week AKA V days (I love roman numerals so you better learn them) but the one thing I did not like was the trip to the hospital with Ellen and Amanda because I fell down a cliff (well it was a X feet drop and it is hard to climb) into the creek with a rocky beach. But I survived with no broken bones sticking out of my leg or just in general.

I thought the photography arc was really fun and I got to go to the darkroom to process film and learn more about cameras in this arc.

Mendocino woodlands

Last week I went to Mendocino for the whole week but I don't really remember that much except that I had to go to the hospital. The reason was because I was playing tag and I was running and didn't notice a 4 metre drop to a creek that was really big. I didn't fall in the water but I hit a log during my fall (I think ya punks (joking but I think so)).

It was also my birthday on the day I had to go to the hospital (so sad right(well sort of)) for at least 2 hours and it was also Wednesday when I left.

Accomplishing parts of my PROJECT

Today I was drawing my technical drawing draft and I needed to figure out the measurements for it and I did it, FINALLY all my hard work has payed for the whole day of school.

Pier 24

Today we went to Pier 24 and looked at photos that are some other photos and changed it around so it looks different and we were there with the orange band looking at the pictures all morning. After we finished we walked to the ferry building and ate lunch, After that I told Amanda we should go to Boudin bakery and look at the museum like place upstairs near the restaurant. Once we left we went to get ice cream and once we finished we walked back to school and it was time to nearly leave so I did my homework (I know so weird including this blog post, WEIRD).


Declaration

October 6, 2014


Dear School of Applied Tinkering,
I, Julian Hayes, am proposing a final arc project on photography to draw my dream house and do a timelapse on a graph paper or draft paper. This relates to our photography arc because I will need to do a timelapse of my technical drawing. A time lapse is a series of photos in a fast video so you can see the progress of something very quickly. This is interesting to me because the timelapse will show the progress of each line that I draw. I think making the drawing will make me become better at doing architecture because I want to be an architect when I grow up.  
At the end of this project, I will have a timelapse of my technical drawing. Time-permitting, I would like to then create a digital dream house on my computer.
In order to accomplish this, I will spend two weeks in Brightworks drawing my dream house and I will also take a picture every time I draw a line on the paper. I request $20 to fund this project, as I will need to purchase drafting paper. The rest of the materials are already available, including a pencil, camera, tripod, computer, and time lapse editing software for the materials.

I am excited to do this project because I will learn more about architecture. I know about the door symbol on drawings and my Grandpa and Alison think I have a potential to be an architect, This project will let me learn more about architecture, photography, and time lapse.

Today the red band day

Today I was working on my project which is to draw my dream house which is a technical drawing and take a timelapse everytime I draw a line. After park and lunch I was helping Oscar on his project which was just him taking photos of me in different positions with a spear(which was made very quickly). After helping Oscar I worked on my project a little bit more then we were going on a photo safari with the red band (which is the youngest band at school). After walking around on a few blocks of red band taking photos and seeing a person doing an art piece and came back to school

a day at circle.

October the first

Today my band was writing about our projects for the arc and I didn’t know what to write down. Later Sean came and asked if I could come with Kat and Khalia to work more on the shelves we were making yesterday. Kat, Khalia and I went to the workshop to build the shelves. When we finished making the first shelf we went to the upstairs band space to see it worked and it did. So we got some wood to put in the gaps in the wall. Once we drilled the shelf on we tested it with a glass jar full of pens and it sadly fell, jokes it actually worked so we went to build another shelf but we had to measure the space we were going to put it in. Once we got the final measurements we went back to the workshop to build and we cut 2 pieces and measured were we had to cut it some more with the chopsaw and the jigsaw but we only got to do the chop saw.

After park and lunch we were going to do some more thinking for our projects and I asked Amanda what I should do and she asked me what was my favorite part of the arc so far and I told her it was the technical drawings and I said I could take a timelapse of me doing the drawing until I finish. 25 minutes later Oscar’s parents arrive to teach us how to edit pictures on Pixlr and using the polaroid and taking the film to put on paper. After a while it was the end of the day but read this last 2 sentences below


In my selfie you can see that I am in the kitchen doing my homework. But I have a cool fridge, and that makes me seem interesting and my life is cool, jokes.

Today I went on pixlr and used the pencil tool and wrote MINECRAFT. I tried saving it as a PXD but it didn't work so I did JPEG. I love pixlr so much.
